Local NDP call anti-abortion comments ‘archaic’

“The Brantford-Brant NDP denounces these extreme statements in the strongest terms and we call on all local leaders to denounce these archaic views as well,” said Myles Hosie, president of the Brantford-Brant NDP Riding Association.

“Not only is abortion a long-settled legal issue in Canada but, when polled, it is a right that three quarters of Canadians support. The views of Mr. Bouma and Mr. Oosterhoff do not reflect the opinions of the majority of Canadians and the majority of the people of Brantford-Brant.”

Sawyer, who is running for the NDP in Brantford-Brant in the Oct. 21 federal election. “We supported the NDP because they represented workers and we were a working family.”

Sawyer, who is Anishinaaabe, from the Mnjikaning of Rama, Marten Clan, is an Indigenous education teacher employed by the Grand Erie District School Board. The Mnjikaning of Rama First Nations reserve is located just outside of Orillia but Sawyer was raised off-reserve in Peterborough.

Sawyer was recently elected to the provincial executive of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario. She was also recently recognized by the federation with a curriculum development award for her work on a new Grade 6 unit on Indigenous people and residential schools.

Local candidates preparing for federal election

Myles Hosie, president of the federal and provincial NDP electoral district associations for Brantford-Brant, said they, too, have yet to set a date for a nomination meeting.

Hosie said they have at least one potential candidate “going through due diligence.”

“In the meantime, we are working on solidifying our game plan for this upcoming election and doing the ground work necessary to ensure Brantford-Brant has a strong progressive choice on the ballot.”
